Welcome to the second episode of HSPA Mic'd Up, hosted by Sam and Ava from the senior leadership team. In this episode, our hosts talk to the amazing Primary School Captains: Molly, Carmen, Indy and Osian! We discover what it’s like to be a Primary Captain, and speak about the recently announced Primary School musical. If you don’t know what the musical is, tune in to find out!
Before we begin, we acknowledge the Awabakal and Worimi people, traditional custodians of the land where we learn and perform. We pay our respects to elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
AvaThank you for tuning in. Hi everyone, my name is Ava. I use She, Her Pronouns, and I'm in the School for Music. I am the SRC director alongside Tessa and co-direct the communications portfolio with Nick. You've probably seen me around school performing in different shows and performances.
SamHi, my name's Sam and I use She, Her Pronouns, and I'm a drama student. I am the School Captain and I co-direct the Evironment Portfolio with Noah. I also help run the Gardening Club and the Crochet Club.
AvaOn our first episode of Mic'd Up, we spoke to the two incredible Sandys from our 2025 school musical Greece, Emma and Zaya. For our second episode, we will be talking to the primary school captains. And if you don't know what the primary musical is already, keep listening to find out.
SamLet's get into it! Today we are joined by the four awesome primary captains to speak about what it's like to be a captain and the primary school musical. Would you all like to introduce yourselves, please?
MollyHi, my name's Molly. I use she, her pronouns, and I'm in the school for dance.
IndyHi, I'm Indy. I use she, her pronouns, and I'm in the school for dance.
CarmenHi, my name's Carmen. I use she, her pronouns, and I'm in the school for music.
OsianHi, my name's Oshi. I use he, him pronouns and I'm in the school for music.
AvaPerfect. Now we have some questions for you. So question number one is what is it like being a primary school captain?
MollyIt's lots of fun. We have a Monday morning assembly and we get to do announcements and do a gotcha draw.
AvaVery interesting. That's okay.
IndyUm, I love going up to Miss Trudy's office and just going for a walk every Monday morning just because I don't like doing English in the morning.
AvaI bet Miss Trudy must love you so much, Indy.
CarmenUm, it's really exciting being school captain. We get to wear badges, but I always lose mine.
SamBut it's very fun. Me too, honestly.
OsianI find it really exciting, especially because in the mornings on Mondays, like most of them said, uh we like get to go walk around. We have to get the keys for the gotcha boxes, drawer out. It's pretty fun.
AvaYeah, that's awesome. And was there anything scary about getting school captain, or were you nervous when you found out?
MollyIt was really scary being backstage waiting to see who got it. But once your name got called, all the nerves just went away and it was really exciting.
IndyWhen you were like standing backstage, crossing your fingers, like being scared, or you and your friends like hugging each other, it was really scary, especially because I was called very last, so I was like, oh, it's not gonna happen. The anticipation.
AvaThe anticipation built up.
CarmenUm so when I was backstage, I had like this feeling everyone else was gonna get it. And that then when they called my name, I didn't hear it. And then they were like, You go up, and I'm like, what? And then I was walking on and I went on from like the back, and I'm just like, oh.
AvaYeah, it's hard to pay attention when you're a bit nervous, huh?
IndyYeah.
OsianYeah, I was really nervous. And I was the first one. Um I didn't know fully what to do, and then I was like, oh yay. And then the teachers were like, go, go, go. And I'm like, oh, I shake hands, oh, I get the award. Confusing.
SamNo, no. Beautiful. Alright, um, second question: what are your dreams for the year ahead?
MollySo I would say it's the same for most of us, and it's to get the toilets like well, mainly the girls' toilets, because I haven't seen the boys' toilets. But it's to get like the toilets like painted.
SamLike beautify? Yeah.
IndyYeah, yeah.
SamYeah. Gorgeous.
IndyI definitely agree because I've actually heard people like newbies like kind of like not wanting to go to the bathroom because they're too scared that there's gonna be a spider that's like just around. So we just need to clean them a bit.
SamDefinitely.
CarmenSo yeah, definitely the bathrooms are a problem. And um I it'll be really fun to do like some fundraisers to make them cleaner.
SpeakerYeah.
CarmenAnd um, well, our Easter Day's coming up, and that's gonna be really fun. So PJs.
SamYes. Can you tell us a bit more about Easter Day?
CarmenSo, um, we wear our pajamas and uh we do like this like Easter egg thing. I kind of don't know what it is. But um we also get to do crazy hair and it's really fun. I love crazy hair.
AvaCrazy hair days are so good. Amazing. How about you, Oshi?
OsianUm, yeah, I'm really excited to do the fundraisers. They were like, and the bake sales are so funny. Bake sales are so good. You just get a good green bake sale. And I'm also really excited to like run the assemblies, speak in the assemblies. That's gonna be super awesome. Really excited for that. Definitely.
AvaOkay, perfect. Now, on to the primary musical, which is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Jr. Um, so one question we have about it is what are you most excited about with this production?
MollyWell, I'm super excited to see the sets and how it all works out.
IndyI'm excited to see who gets all the main roles, the costumes, just to like have fun backstage and just all the fun rehearsals.
AvaYes.
CarmenUh I'm really excited because it's gonna be my first musical. And I can't wait to see what gets to happen backstage.
SamYeah, definitely. You get to see all about the happenings of a show, and yeah, it's so exciting.
AvaAnd back backstage stories are so fun, like after shows and that. They're so fun.
SamI agree.
OsianYeah, I'm really excited. Um, just being there. Because it's also my first year doing a musical. Never done one before. Really exciting.
SamYeah.
OsianJust being there.
AvaAnd to add on to what Molly said, like, I'm excited to see how the set turns out. Because Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is known for like Chocolate River and like umpa loompas, and you're like, oh, I'm not sure how they're gonna make this happen, but it's gonna be so exciting.
SamIt's just it's fabulous for everyone who's like seen the show before, watched the movies. Like, um, it's just yeah, it's fabulous. So can't wait to see it come to life. Beautiful. Um, and a last question. Uh, in our last episode, we asked Emma and Zaya, who played Sandy in Greece, um, to give advice to anyone who was interested in auditioning this year for the musical. Uh, do you have any advice for the people auditioning?
MollyWell, kind of just do your best, go out there, put yourself forward. The teachers are definitely not scary when you do it. And it's just lots of fun.
IndyUm, to just know that even if like you look on stage like before you audition and there's someone else who's going and you're like, oh, they're so much better than me. I'm scared, they're definitely gonna get in, I'm not. Just know that like as long as you try, that's not gonna matter.
SamYes, definitely.
CarmenUm, so to just stay calm and remember that you're amazing no matter what happens.
SamOh, I so agree. Yes. The self-confidence is is so key. Yes.
OsianWell, if you aren't confident, I reckon you should just give it a go. If you don't make it, you should be proud of yourself anyway, because you worked up. Exactly. Audition.
AvaThere's nothing wrong with trying.
SamY eah, and it's so it's such a brave thing to do. Um, getting up there on that stage and auditioning is it's it's amazing. Beautiful. Thank you. You guys are awesome. Thank you for coming.
